The Stroke Section physicians are faculty members at the Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. They have clinical hospital privileges at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and/or St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Outpatient clinics are held at the Center for Advanced Medicine in the Central West End and Center 40 in Brentwood, MO.

Andria Ford is a Professor of Neurology and Radiology and Section Head for the Stroke Center.  She received her undergraduate degree from Duke University in Biomedical Engineering and her medical degree from the University of Oklahoma. After medical school, she completed a Neurology residency and Vascular Neurology Fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. She then completed a research fellowship in stroke followed by a Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation.  She specializes in acute stroke management, stroke in young adults, aging-related and inherited forms of cerebral small vessel disease and neurological impairment in sickle cell disease.  She directs the Stroke Patient Access Core (SPAC) which oversees participant enrollment into numerous stroke clinical trials conducted at BJH-Washington University School of Medicine.  She is a principal investigator in NIH-funded clinical and translational research studies to help understand, treat and prevent stroke.

David Carpenter is a Professor of Neurology and the Medical Director for the Comprehensive Stroke Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University. He received his M.D. from the Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine where he also completed a Neurology Residency. He then completed an NINDS Fellowship. Dr. Carpenter has an active outpatient clinic where he sees multiple types of stroke patients. This includes not only those who have experienced more common etiologies of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, but also patients who have suffered from many of the more rare causes of stroke.

Dr. Kristin Guilliams is an Assistant Professor of Neurology, Pediatrics, and Radiology.  She received her undergraduate degree in neuroscience from Furman University and her medical degree from the University of Virginia. She completed her child neurology residency and pediatric critical care fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Guilliams leads the Pediatric Stroke Program at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and serves on the BJC HealthCare System Stroke Clinical Excellence Council. She is a member of the International Pediatric Stroke Organization, where she co-chairs the Acute Management Research group, and the Pediatric Neurocritical Care Research Group. Her translational imaging lab investigates changes of blood flow and oxygen use in the brain throughout childhood in children with and without sickle cell disease to better understand mechanisms of pediatric stroke.

He received his M.D. from Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University in Chicago, Illinois. After medical school, he completed a Neurology residency at the University of California-Davis. He then came to Washington University where he completed a Vascular Neurology clinical fellowship.

Salah Keyrouz is a Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery. He heads the Neurocritical Care section in the department of Neurology and serves as the Medical Director for Neurocritical Care Unit. He received his M.D. from The Lebanese University, Faculty of Medical Sciences in Beirut, Lebanon. After medical school, he completed a Neurology residency at the University of Arkansas. He then came to Washington University where he completed a Neurocritical Care fellowship. He practices both vascular and critical care neurology and neurosurgery. Dr. Keyrouz’s research interests revolve around intracerebral hemorrhage as well as medical complications in neurocritical care, and the provision of acute stroke care using telemedicine.

Jin-Moo Lee is the Norman J. Stupp Professor of Neurology and Section Head for the Stroke Center. He received his MD and PhD at Weill Cornell Medical College. After medical school he completed a Neurology residency at the University of Pennsylvania. He then came to Washington University where he completed a Vascular Neurology clinical fellowship followed by a post-doctoral research fellowship. He has served as a chair or board member on multiple national and international stroke associations.

Alyssa Smith is an Assistant Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics. She received her undergraduate degree in bioinformatics from Loyola University Chicago and her medical degree from Rush Medical College. She completed her child neurology residency and pediatric neurocritical care fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. Smith leads the Neurorehabilitation Program at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and is a Pediatric Acute Stroke Attending. She is a member of the International Pediatric Stroke Organization and the Pediatric Neurocritical Care Research Group. Her clinical research is focused on outcomes after pediatric brain injury. She is the site PI for the StrokeNet I-ACQUIRE study which is a Phase III clinical trial to compare the efficacy of two dosages of an infant rehabilitation protocol (I-ACQUIRE) to the standard of care for infant rehabilitation in infants who have experienced Perinatal Arterial Ischemic Stroke.

Allyson Zazulia is a Professor of Neurology and has served as the Associate Dean for Continuing Medical Education since 2014. She received her MD from Georgetown. She has also completed a research fellowship in Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism, studying the pathophysiology of human cerebral circulation.
